During my usual 2 hour weekend drive on one of the country's most renewed expressways (known to some as the world's largest parking lot, due to the traffic) my conversation was more of a debate. The debate centered around the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta. It is more of a Golf, a Passat or a hybrid? Well, there it was. Gliding past us on the left lane. ''Dad, it looks like a missle!'' ''Honery, what a great family car. Wow, I wouldn't mind owning that. These were just some of the comments inspired by the new VW Jetta design. Those Germans, they did it again. Manufacturing a car which shares many characteristics with all of it's siblings.
The Jetta is offered in three different models: a base GL, a midlevel GLS, and a top of the line GLX.
The base engine remains a 2.0-liter 115 horsepower with a noticeable torque adjustment at 3200 rmp, although standard on the most popular selling model GLS. For those economy conscious, VW is planning on offering the well talked about 90 horsepower turbo diesel four cylinder. Look forward to almost 50 miles per gallon.
Although somewhat pricey at almost $22,00 for a well equipped GLS with a VR6 engine, the Jetta offers excellent safety features (front and side airbags) abundant trunk space, a more "upscaled" interior feel and many more features.
In summary, it can be characterized as a good "bang for your buck" which can be pleasing to many for style, comfort and beauty.
