The Mitsubishi Eclipse is available in three models: the RS, GS and the GT. The GT replaces last year's GS-T. The GT is a totally revamped vehicle from its predecessor. Gone are the turbo four cylinder and all wheel drive, replaced by a bigger and smoother V6. The RS and GS are offered with the four-cylinder engine; however, long gone is the turbo option. The most obvious change is the new styling; the car has a refined look that is sporty and very attractive. The exterior door panels have Ferrari-type air channels that make it look like its going fast standing still. The front end incorporates nicely positioned fog lamps that really enhance night driving. The gas filler door gives it a sporty Grand Prix racecar look. The spoiler on the rear also adds to the racecar look. All things being equal, I find the exterior styling much improved and friendly to the eye.

The interior is available in soft leather and the seats offer excellent comfort and support. The dash display is straightforward and easy to read. I particularly like the radio display location, above the center dash vents just below the top of the dash. This is a safety feature that will keep your eyes closer to the road with your head up when you're channel surfing. The controls for the radio and CD payer remain in their traditional position a bit lower in the center console. I found the rear seats to be more comfortable than most cars in this class, they offer ample legroom for an average height person, however, and anyone over six feet will find it a bit restrictive. The rear seats are a little tight to get in and out of, but what two-door sports car isn't.

A 3.0-liter V6 with double overhead cams and four valves per cylinder power the GT. The engine puts out 205 hp and 205 lb-ft torque. This engine is smooth and has a lot of low-end torque, I drove the stick shift, but an automatic would work well with all this power. Shifting the manual is fun and precise so an automatic is not a recommendation but a serious option if you prefer not to bang some gears. The horsepower to weight ratio is 15.6, that’s 1 horsepower for every 15.6 pounds. The four corners are linked to an independent suspension with 4 wheel antilock disk brakes. Stopping is straight and effortless with good pedal feedback.

The Eclipse GT today, as in the past, will definitely appeal to the masses. However today, Mitsubishi offers more of a good reason than just price. It goes without saying I like the car, and with a base price of $24,000, this car will continue appeal to the young and the not so young that want to zip around in a nicely styled car with a little attitude.
