Price new Honda S2000
September 1999, Honda will enter the fiercely competitive two-seat convertible roadster market with the introduction of the S2000. Honda is pulling all stops in what is sure to be a big hit. The S2000 is based on a front engine rear wheel drive chassis, with an oversized cross section for increased strength. The corners are fitted to unequal length control arms that provide independent suspension with four wheel anti lock disc brakes, which is all needed to handle what is under the hood. The S2000 has a 2.0 liter inline all aluminum double overhead cam four cylinder engine. The output is 245 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque with an incredible red line of 8900 RPM. All of this has been achieved without the help of a turbo or super charger. The transmission is a 6 speed close ratio and an automatic transmission is not available as an option. What makes this all so very impressive is the weight, a measly 2,800 lbs., for a horsepower to weight ratio of 11.42 pounds per 1 horsepower. By comparison, the BMW Roadster is 12.85 pounds, and the Porsche Boxster is 14.03 pounds. All for about 10-13 thousand dollars less than the other two. Now it is true that this car is not in the same class as the other two, but at this price you can get a car that is just as attractive for a lot less and it really is faster than the other two. If you are still undecided ask yourself this, could you say no to a convertible. So instead of admiring the other roadsters from the sidelines, get one and start to have some fun. The base price is expected to be $30,000, and with no options available you might be able to work a deal for less than that. This depends on how well this car is received. My advice here is to get one fast before the dealers realize that there may be a run on these cars and the law of supply and demand comes into play.
The exterior styling is sleek and smooth, with the top up or down. The interior is clean and very attractive with a digital instrument display and a comfortable cockpit layout. The seats also have a racecar look that is very supportive and comfortable. The S2000 comes with a power top, CD player, cruise control and keyless entry. There are no options offered other than color; red, white, silver and black.
Some drawbacks to the S2000 are trunk space, roughly 5 cubic feet, about the same size of a Miata. Engine noise, to be expected with this RPM capability. Narrow power band, you have to keep this little engine revved up to make it move. This is either love or hate; I personally love to wind them up.
The S2000 comes with the Honda standard warranty of 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first and that does not cover the maintenance.
